Dr. M. Amin Arnaout (BS ’70, MD ’74) is a pioneering physican-scientist and nephrologist who has received global accolades, including the American Society of Nephrology’s Homer W. Smith Award in 2018, which “recognizes one of the major intellectual forces in renal physiology,” and the 2017 Kuwait Prize in Applied Medical Sciences. Arnaout has also been celebrated by his alma mater. When he was selected to receive the 2018 Homer W. Smith Award for the American Society of Nephrology, AUB President Fadlo R. Khuri described him as “a stellar scholar, a groundbreaking scientist, a dedicated mentor, and an even finer human being, one who has given generously of his time for his alma mater.” Arnaout was a leading member of the International Advisory Committee of the American University of Beirut’s Faculty of Medicine for five years, “leveraging his impeccable standards and judgment to ensure that his alma mater was positioning itself to lead Lebanon and the Arab world in research, teaching and patient care, three subjects he is immensely passionate about,” said Khuri.
A professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, director of Leukocyte Biology and Inflammation Laboratory and the Structural Biology Program at the Massachusetts General Hospital, and physician and chief emeritus of the Division of Nephrology at the Massachusetts General Hospital, Arnaout is also an AUB donor. He recently made a gift to establish the Dr. M. Amin Arnaout Award in Medicine, which will be conferred on a student majoring in medicine graduating with High Distinction or Distinction and has demonstrated integrity, diligence, and dedication to the academic profession. “I am deeply honored and grateful to my alma mater for recognizing my academic contributions through this named award. I hope that this award will inspire and support the next generation of medical students as they pursue their own dreams and aspirations in exploring the fascinating worlds within and around us,” said Arnaout.
“We are honored to have one of our distinguished alumni establish a student award that celebrates student excellence,” said Associate Vice President for Development Walid Katergi.
