Partnering to support exceptional students at the American University of Beirut

January 19, 2023

CMA CGM Group and the American University of Beirut (AUB) share a very special bond through a strong attachment to Lebanon and to the development of its educational sector.

These values are at the core of their recent partnership to establish the “CMA CGM Excellence Fund for Lebanon,” which will provide scholarships over three years to 120 AUB students pursuing undergraduate degrees in business, computer science, and economics in addition to MS degrees in business analytics. The selection of qualified students will be based on the evaluation and recommendation of AUB’s Office of Financial Aid, as well as other criteria, notably academic excellence and students’ socio-economic circumstances. The aim is to provide an opportunity for students who would not otherwise have been able, for financial reasons, to access studies at AUB.

“During these unprecedented times, we at the American University of Beirut are very proud to partner with CMA CGM to achieve even greater impact,” said Senior Vice President for Advancement and Business Development Imad B. Baalbaki. “The scholarship support is invaluable, but the CMA CGM Scholarship program provides something even more precious: hope to some of our many extraordinary students who are struggling during these challenging times.”

The CMA CGM Group is the world’s third largest container shipping company and a global leader in shipping and logistics. With over 2,000 employees in Lebanon as of the beginning of 2023, the group is now one of the leading employers in the country. In 2022, it created 1,100 jobs to help curb the increasing Lebanese youth emigration.

For a family business with strong human values, the field of education implies a responsibility towards future generations who will contribute to the economic reconstruction of Lebanon. CMA CGM is active in a number of transport and logistics sectors as well as digital, agricultural, food, and shared service centers in Lebanon.
